Hi all, I wanted to take this opportunity to thank you all for your interest in attendance at the first of many green team meetings. The support that you've all shown for this important effort has been fantastic. The survival of this group depends strongly on how well we monitor our progress. At the meeting yesterday, we discussed several adjustments that you can make to save the department some money and/or lessen our departmental footprint. Recall that by making at least 2 of these adjustments by our next meeting at the end of February, you'll win a prize! You can: 1. Dial down your heat or air conditioning (at home or if this is an option in your office/lab...don't mess with Ken's lab!) by a few degrees. 2. If you're thinking about purchasing new appliances/electronics/windows, opt for energy efficient stuff. 3. If you're operating an old gas guzzling leaf blower, replace with a quieter electric version, or a rake. 4. Save water by following tips at http://www.bewaterwise.com/20_gal.html 5. Bike/walk/carpool to work. Talk to Kristina Valenzuela, Caltech's employee transportation coordinator, about vanpooling or about free parking permits for bike/walkers. 6. Recycle more! Bring your ewaste in to Amy, she loves it! If you'd like recycle bins in your office, Amy'll get on that. 7. Change your incandescent bulbs to compact fluorescents, then tell me so I can enter the info at onebillionbulbs.com 8. Power computers, household appliances, TVs, electronics, lights, and other energy "vampires" off. Talk to your local custodian about not turning every light in your building on. 9. If you're operating a CRT monitor, get it changed for free! From here on out, green@gps.caltech.edu will be the source of all questions/suggestions regarding efficiency/sustainability. If you have any input, or would like to report all the great things you're doing from the list above, please don't hesitate to let us know. See you at the February meeting! Cheers, Green
